Can Osteopathy help my

BACK PAIN
By Ali Simpson

THE ANSWER IS YES!

According to a survey of Australian Osteopaths in 2018, the most frequently treated musculoskeletal disorders were low back pain, neck pain, thoracic (mid-back) pain and headache disorders!

If you suffer from back pain, you’re certainly not alone. Most people at some stage in their life, regardless of their age or fitness level, will experience some form of back pain.

Osteopaths are trained in treating and managing these complaints and will work with you to develop the best treatment plan for you.

HOW WILL AN OSTEOPATH HELP?

Back pain tends to present in one of two forms:

  • Acute back pain – tends to come on suddenly, and is often experienced with muscular strain or injury.

  • Chronic back pain – often experienced with degenerative conditions involving the body’s joints and may go on for months.

Whether your injury is old, or new, there are things that can be done to help you.

Your Osteopath will take a thorough history and examination to discover what the cause of your pain could be.

Then, they will discuss with you the most suitable treatment and management plan going forward.

This may involve giving you advice and tips on how to decrease your pain and improve your function.

Manual therapy may be performed depending on your situation.

Exercises may also be given to you to help with your recovery process.

WHAT CAN TRIGGER UPPER OR LOWER BACK PAIN?

There are various events which can trigger back pain. They may include:

      • Bending and lifting awkwardly or without supporting the spine correctly
      • Sudden falls or accidents, involving force or awkward movement
      • Poor posture particularly in a seated position and for long periods
      • Referred pain from neck and shoulder injury
      • Sporting activity that involves twisting, impact or repetition.
      • Periods of prolonged rest, inactivity and sleeping position.
