Hydrotherapy
Benefits of Hydrotherapy
Movement in water is easier than on land. The effect of buoyancy, combined with warm water, helps reduce pain and muscle spasm. The turbulence of the water can also be used to create resistance, which is fantastic for strengthening without jarring.
Patients do not need to be able to swim in order to benefit from hydrotherapy.
Hydrotherapy helps to:
- Strengthen muscles
- Mobilise joints
- Improve general fitness
- Improve balance and coordination
- Promote relaxation.
Hydrotherapy is usually one component of an overall rehabilitation program.
It can offer specific relief to people with:
- Arthritic problems,
- Back and neck pain,
- Sports injuries,
- Work-related injuries
- Multi-trauma victims from motor vehicle accidents.
- Stroke or brain injuries
- Pre and post natal women
- Following orthopedic surgery (e.g. knee reconstruction)
- Pinned leg fractures where weight bearing is limited.
In the sporting population it is predominantly used for recovery sessions and to maintain fitness whilst injured by doing a deep water running program.

Mark Zampatti and Grant Brauer conduct two group sessions of hydrotherapy per week at the Blue Water Fitness Centre on a Tuesday and Friday morning at 11:30 AM. In order to assess your safety and suitability for a hydrotherapy program, a pre-hydrotherapy assessment is required by one of our physiotherapists.
